I had the opportunity to hear james nachtwey speak here in Pittsburgh last night. If you don’t know who james nachtwey is, he is a documentary photographer that has focused on war photography for over 20 years. I saw his documentary, ‘war photographer’ over a month ago, so I was delighted to hear that he was coming to town to speak.
he is a very humble, soft spoken man, who simply wants to give a voice to people that otherwise don’t have one. his images are very real, and direct, and emotional. he is very good at becoming immersed in a scene, and the images he produces as a result can have the same impact as if you were punched in the gut. it’s amazing the atrocities he’s been witness to over the years- not only overseas, but on our own soil. he lives in new york, and was at ground zero on 9/11. take a look at some of the images on his website, and if you can, buy his dvd. the stories he tells through his photos are the kind that move you to tears, then make you angry, and then make you want to make changes. i can’t think of a better job to have. what a privelege to be able to make a difference in people’s lives like that.
on that note, pittsburgh’s own renee rosensteel will be at space gallery this evening from 6-9 as part of a one-night exhibit of photographs from two of Emergency’s three Afghanistan surgery centers, in the capital city of Kabul and in Anabah. (Emergency was founded by Dr. Gino Strada. it is an Italian nonprofit agency that runs free hospitals for the victims of war and landmines in Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Cambodia and Sri Lanka.) Dr. Gino Strada will also be speaking tonight. Hope to see you there!
