comfort food November 21, 2006

Filed under: just me — kim @ 9:42 pm

i’ve been fighting the cold/flu bug that’s been going around for about two weeks now. i thought i had it kicked, and then it came back this past weekend and knocked me out of commission again. i’m finally back on the mend.
anyway, the other night i made a huge pot of matzo ball soup, which is by far my favorite comfort food when i’m sick. i have to admit i don’t know the ‘traditional’ way to make it- i was introduced to the joys of matzo ball soup by a coworker several years ago. I use the recipe on the box for the matzo balls, and then the soup itself I make more like a chicken soup. this time i used chicken, onions, spinich and white beans. add in some matzo balls, and you’ve got this super delicious, doughy goodness. if you’ve never had matzo ball soup, pick up some mix next time your at the grocery store. it’s very easy to make, and one pot will last you a while. it’s seriously one of the best gifts you can give yourself- anytime really, but especially when you’re feeling under the weather.

convertable tiaras

Filed under: wedding resources — kim @ 7:42 pm

Check these out: TigerLilly makes tiaras and headbands for your wedding day, which convert to necklaces so you can wear them again. Genius!
I wish they were around when I got married! I spent over $200 on my tiara/ headpiece for my wedding, wore it once, and my dog just ate it this summer. (seriously). I would have loved to have something like this that I could actually wear over again. They are in salons across the country, and while there are some in PA, it doesn’t look like there are any in the ‘Burgh just yet. But I bet you can have it shipped to you…

engagement session November 17, 2006

Filed under: around town — kim @ 11:09 pm

i shot an engagement session two weekends ago with ronette and cooper. the day he proposed included dinner at the melting pot in station square and a ride up the incline to the top of mt. washington…so that’s what we did! i had a great time with them- they are quite obviously very much in love. plus by the end of the evening, they had convinced me to give beer another chance (and that’s no small feat, i gave up on ever liking beer years ago)!

here are a few from the day-

breakfast with the mayor November 2, 2006

Filed under: around town — kim @ 3:43 pm

john fetterman, the mayor of braddock, took some time out of his schedule on sunday to show a group of us around his town. we started out with breakfast at the elk’s club, where they only had one thing in the menu -three eggs over easy, three pieces of bacon and toast. it was one of the tastiest breakfasts’ i’ve had.
he’s young- as far as mayors tend to go- and i was struck by how committed he is to really make a difference here. he’s humble and quiet and laid back, and definitely didn’t like having his picture taken, but he put up with a whole afternoon of it, in the hopes that any attention it brings his town - and it’s plight- is worth it.

he took us all over braddock. you could tell he knows it well. we went back to this little courtyard squeezed behind these buildings, where he said this was the best backyard in braddock. it was an overgrown mess- all weeds and brambles and in need of a huge overhaul. but he saw the potential. that’s what i liked about john- he sees through what it was, and what it is now- to what it could be.

we were here about two weeks ago, and saw this abandoned winnebago in an overgrown lot. this time, the thing had been completely stripped of anything worth any money. inside. outside. just the shell left. not a small task on a winnebago.

this struck john as funny. “that’s a lot of work. i mean, if you’re going to put that much effort into something, why not just go out and get a job?”
