racing for the cure- day 1 March 14, 2007

Filed under: just me — kim @ 11:03 pm

ok, so today was my first official day after signing up to run a 5k in this years race for the cure. no running today, but i did go to yoga this morning. i go to amazing yoga in wexford. I say ‘go’ loosely, because this is the first time i’ve been in about 6 months (i hibernate in the winter). i like normal yoga, but classes at amazing yoga are an hour and fifteen minutes long, and the studio is heated to 100 degrees the entire time! it’s based on the principals of baptiste power yoga, where you are constantly moving and challenging yourself. it’s a hardcore workout- the difference is really astounding. if you go, bring a towel and a bottle of water!
tomorrow i’m going to dust off the treadmill and go for a little run. i do mean little- i think i would fall over if i try anything longer than a mile. or a half mile…

racing for the cure March 13, 2007

Filed under: just me — kim @ 2:56 pm

ok, so i’m no runner (by any means), but i just signed up to run a 5k at this years race for the cure. Breast cancer hits close to home for me, as my mother is a breast cancer survivor. Both of my grandmothers also had breast cancer (my dad’s mom will be 96 this year!). My mom’s mom had a mastectomy before I was born, and survived another 15 or so years cancer-free before the cancer came back. She fought a tough fight for several years, and passed away a few days before I graduated high school.

I’ll be running in honor of my mom and grandma roeser, and in memory of my grandma fec. Having breast cancer run in my family as it does means my sisters and I need to be extra careful. I’d like to raise money and do whatever I can to make sure that when I have a daughter, she doesn’t need to worry about it.

So I have two months to get in respectable enough shape to run a 5k without completely humiliating myself. (This might mean I need to lay off the iced vanilla coffees for a while). I don’t plan on finishing first, I just want to finish. My goal is to raise $150. If you would like to support me in the race, you can donate online here. I’ll be posting updates on my progress on my blog, so stay tuned…

one light March 11, 2007

Filed under: photography resources — kim @ 1:13 pm

this is my favorite pic i took during zack arias’ onelight workshop. i’m very much a natural light shooter, so i was debating on whether or not to attend, (as the workshop is all about off-camera flash). man, am i glad i did! it was, by far, the best photography related workshop i have ever attended. it totally changed the way i’ll approach lighting from now on. if you have any interest in photography, especially weddings or editorial portraiture, you simply have to attend one of zack’s workshops. i think he has one in dc in may. make the trip. you’ll thank me later.

this shot was taken in the hallway of the hotel, with one off-camera flash on a light stand bouncing into a 60″ umbrella. flash was triggered using pocket wizards.

(our model’s name is megan, and she went to a shoot for seventeen magazine the next day. look for her in the june issue!)

I love how he is totally silhouetted, slightly outlined by the light behind him

i dig how ethan fades into the black background here

the stage lighting was awesome: check how it looks so thick that his body is casting shadows; cutting right through the light. 6014.jpg

adobe lightroom March 6, 2007

I’m a huge fan. I’ve been using their beta version for several months, and just received my copy of the newly released full version in the mail. I’m sooooo in love with this program! It’s wonderful for quickly importing, sorting, doing batch edits, embedding metadata and even making slideshows. My after-wedding workflow has been cut in half! You can adjust curves, levels, and white balance, (along with a ton of other features) and it treats jpegs just like RAW files. Plus, it’s non-destructive editing, so you can tweak your jpegs to your hearts content without worrying about damaging the original file. I absolutely recommend this program to anyone that deals with a large number of digital files on a regular basis. My editing life is so much easier thanks to Lightroom. If you’re not already using it, you can download a free 30 day trial at http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/. The introductory price is $199 until April (i think), when it goes up to $299, so if you’re going to buy it, do it soon!

I was recently interviewed for an article in Pittsburgh Dish. The article came out today. Check it out, and make plans to come out for our abandoned spaces exhibit opening this Friday at the Art Center in Butler.

nemacolin

Filed under: wedding resources, around town, just me — kim @ 11:45 am

My husband Ray won an award for being a rockstar salesman, so we were invited to Nemacolin Woodlands resort and spa for an awards banquet and dinner. We stayed in a two bedroom townhouse, and we both got massages at the woodlands spa, all courtesy of his company. I’m sad to say, this was the first professional massage I’ve ever gotten, and now I’m not sure how I’ve lived without them! I definitely recommend going to Nemacolin for a romantic getaway. Let me tell you, I felt pampered the entire time we were there. It would be perfect for an anniversary or a honeymoon if you’re going to stay local. The grounds are beautiful, and they have a ton of activities, including golfing, an equestrian center, fly fishing, a ropes course, and boutique shopping, complete with a hardy & hayes jewelry shop, where I spotted a strand of mikimoto pearls that were to die for. Plus, their spa is considered one of the premiere spa facilities in North America. It made it hard to come back to reality. If you’ve never been to Nemacolin, it’s about an hour and a half from Pittsburgh, and it’s close to Ohiopyle (great for white-water rafting, kayaking, and hiking), Christian W. Klay Winery (a friend of mine got married here a few years ago; good wine and a fabulous old barn perfect for an intimate, rustic reception), and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater.
