liquid sundays April 3, 2007
i was at liquid sunday at diesel this past sunday. they are free monthly events held in the southside that feature local bands and artists. here are some of my pics from the bands soulharmonic and life in bed (as usual, I was just using the lighting from the stage- no flash):
i love that just his hands are in focus, and everything else is in motion.

ryan from soulharmonic

do you guys remember super mario bros.?

Great photos!
Two questions:
1. Is the color stage lighting or did you convert to black and white and then tint?
2. Did you use a tripod? Do you tend to use a tripod often? Which one?
Thanks.
thanks rob! the color is stage lighting, and i didn’t use a tripod. i own one, but i think i’ve used it once in the last 3 years. they are just too cumbersome for me to bother with. these are all shot at 1600 iso, handheld, with either my 70-200 2.8 IS (wide open at 2.8 with IS on), or my 24-70 2.8, also wide open at 2.8. I’m using aperture priority and under-exposing by 1 to 1 1/4 stops to get the shutter quick enough to stop the motion. My shutter speeds were between 1/20 to 1/100 of a second all night long. club lighting is a huge challenge- i wouldn’t be able to do it without those fast lenses.
Thanks. I have one lens that’s fast a 50 mm. that drops to 1.8. It’s a very simple lens — no zoom at all, but boy does it drink in light!
Right now, I’m having “sharpness” issues. Some of it is due to the subjects (birds don’t stand still, flowers and bugs are close-ups with the zoom lens), wind, and holding the camera. Getting something “tack sharp” happens mostly by accident, and I’m trying to learn how to make those happy accidents happen more often. Hence the questions about the tripod.
Your photographs always leave me amazed.
thanks so much rob! i have the 50mm 1.8 also, and it doesn’t seem to get as sharp for me as the other two lenses i mentioned above. plus, it can have a tough time auto-focusing in low light situations, which are the circumstances i’m shooting in about 50% of the time!
are you a member of the pittsburgh flickr group? theres a great group of folks that are pretty active on there; getting together often to meet up and shoot, or just hang out and talk shop, or whatever. you should check it out; i’d love to shoot with you sometime.
